Runaway Husband Nailed, Houston Man Sentenced To 39 Years In Prison For Killing Estranged Wife

Johnny Leon Wilson’s long-running murder case reached its conclusion Thursday when a Harris County judge sentenced the Houston man to 39 years in prison for the murder of his estranged wife, Charine Young Wilson, in 2018. The sentence brings an end to a six-year saga that began when Charine went missing after visiting her ex-husband’s residence near Hobby Airport, according to the Houston Police Department.

The Houston Police Department reports that Charine last entered Wilson’s residence at 8950 Glencrest Street on November 10, 2018. Her 11-year-old son later told authorities that he had ridden with his mother to the unit, but Wilson had left without her.

According to the same statement, surveillance video and a subsequent criminal complaint showed Wilson leaving the apartment with what appeared to be a large bundle wrapped in sheets, and officers found blood and evidence indicating that a body had been dragged across the flat floor. Deputies discovered Charine’s remains on SE 1190A near Richland on December 12, 2018. The Navarro County medical examiner, according to KXXV, determined that Charine had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and that vegetation covered her body.

According to court records, Wilson was arrested in Las Vegas in February 2019 using an alias and returned to Harris County in February 2020, where he was released on bond. He later failed to appear for a scheduled trial in 2023 and removed his ankle monitor, causing police to declare him a fugitive and place him on high-priority wanted lists. ABC13 has reported that “In Pursuit With John Walsh” will cover his case in 2024.

According to Click2Houston, tips to Texas Crime Stoppers led investigators to Grand Prairie, where Wilson was apprehended in December 2024 by members of the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force and the United States Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force. He was apprehended after several years on the run.

Wilson pled guilty to murder in November and was sentenced to 39 years in the Harris County Criminal Justice Center. According to the Houston Chronicle, Wilson, 55, risked life in jail before accepting the plea offer.

According to a City of Houston news release, interagency cooperation, public tips, and task force efforts were instrumental in re-arresting Wilson and resolving the lengthy investigation.
