A man and woman were taken into custody in what authorities described as a thwarted attempt to provide narcotics to inmates in the Los Angeles County jail system.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Custody Services Division launched an investigation into the smuggling of contraband into the jail via the US Postal Service. The Organized Gang Task Force of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department executed a search warrant at Hermosa Beach, a southern seaside hamlet.

Authorities claimed a 43-year-old woman sent narcotics to a county jail. She was cited and released from custody.
A 55-year-old man was arrested in connection with the inquiry and is still in detention. Additional information on his arrest and the allegations against him was not immediately available.
The narcotics were intercepted before they entered the jails.
The agency stated that it has upgraded security to prevent drugs from entering the jail system, including the installation of 17 body scanners throughout the system and two property scanners at the Pitchess Detention Center visitation center in northern Los Angeles County. The department also possesses 19 narcotics detecting dogs, which are employed for random searches in prison cells.
The sheriff’s department also recommended implementing a digital postal system with smart tablets.
All deputies carry Narcan (naloxone), which prevents overdoses, and it is available in convict living areas.
