Texas Man Sentenced To Prison For Nearly $60 Million Medicare Fraud

A Texas man who schemed his way into nearly $60 million in medical claims for needless medical equipment has been ordered to pay millions in restitution, forfeit cars and properties, and serve 90 months in prison.

Patrick Cassells, 65, of Fulshear, Texas, pled guilty in June 2024 to one count of conspiracy to conduct health-care fraud.

He was sentenced to jail on Friday, along with $25.4 million in reparations and the forfeiture of four vehicles and three Houston residences, according to the Department of Justice.

Cassells owned and ran three companies that provided patients with durable medical equipment such as knee, back, shoulder, and wrist braces.

Cassells lied on the Medicare enrollment form about who owned and operated one of the companies while also cooperating with others who supplied him bogus medical documents for orthotic braces and other equipment, according to the DOJ.

Overall, Cassells was linked to $59.9 million in fraudulent claims and received over $27 million as a result. In addition to his activities in Houston, his objectives included purchasing personal vehicles and other vehicles that he “intended to export to Nigeria,” according to the department.

According to Hoodline, this case is not the first example in Houston involving numerous frauds, including the purchase of cars for shipment overseas, including to Nigeria.
