A man who shot and killed a 35-year-old in his North Memphis driveway in 2023 was sentenced to 26 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.
According to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, Steffon Boatwright will be required to serve 100% of his sentence as part of the plea agreement.
Boatwright was first charged with first-degree murder for the September 2023 homicide of DeMarcus Wilbourn on Chelsea Avenue.
In 2024, Wilbourn’s mother, Connie Matthews, told WREG that Boatwright chased her son down Chelsea Avenue and shot him over 40 times.
Police claim they discovered a blood trail that was nearly the length of a football field.
“He shot him in all parts of his body. His mouth, his jaw, his eye. He shot his eyes out, and he shot him in the head,” Matthews said.
Investigators tracked a trail of blood and shell casings until they arrived at the Boatwright.
Surveillance video also showed gunfire flashes and a suspect fleeing the scene. Boatwright was later found nearby with two weapons.
According to police, Boatwright said, “That’s plain sense. “Yes, I did it.”
The DA’s office stated that Wilbourn’s family was present in court and supported the plea.
