The decapitated and handless body discovered in 1970 in New York has been identified as a Pennsylvania man, authorities said.

According to a news release from the New York State Police, the dismembered body belongs to 35-year-old Clyde A. Coppage, who was living in Genesee, Potter County, at the time of his disappearance. However, more than five decades later, the authorities have yet to identify the killer.

Clyde Coppage missing person case

On March 20, 1970, authorities discovered the Pennsylvania man’s body, missing his head and hands, on Davis Hill Road in Andover, New York.

Over the last 56 years, investigators have continued to conduct investigations, including exhuming the remains in June 2022 to gather DNA. The New York State Police stated that DNA was used to identify Coppage. Police claimed the 35-year-old man was from outside the region and had never been reported missing.

It is unclear what caused the man’s death or who was responsible. The inquiry into Coppage’s death is still open and active, according to the press announcement.

Anyone with information about Coppage’s death can call the New York State Police at 585-344-6200.
