Man apprehended after Cleveland standoff, shootout

An overnight police standoff in Cleveland continued until the early afternoon of Thursday, March 19, resulting in a gunfight between the suspect and authorities.

Officers ultimately arrested one man. There were no injuries.

A man accused of assaulting a woman barricaded himself inside a residence on the 3000 block of Nursery Avenue at 2:40 a.m., according to a Cleveland police spokesperson.

The first police officers and EMS workers who arrived on the scene discovered the woman outside. She was taken to a hospital, and her condition is unknown.

The suspect was there, but he escaped to a nearby home. According to the spokeswoman, authorities are unsure whether the home belonged to him or to the woman. The suspect returned outside with a weapon, then retreated inside to barricade himself.

SWAT personnel were then dispatched to the scene, according to the spokeswoman. Negotiators came at around 5 a.m. and began speaking with the suspect.

A FOX 8 photographer on the scene overnight reported hearing the suspect playing loud music on the front porch.

Police said the man also went live on Facebook.

According to the spokesperson, the suspect fired shots at police officers at one point, but no one was injured.

Several roadways in the neighborhood were blocked, and the public was advised to avoid the area.

The individual was apprehended at 12:30 p.m. and sent to a hospital for evaluation. Charges are pending.
