A correctional officer in Jefferson County has been apprehended on drug and contraband charges, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.
According to officials, Markia Smith, who worked at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer, was arrested on Tuesday during a narcotics investigation.
According to authorities, Smith was charged with marijuana possession and first-degree promoting prison contraband. Investigators stated that around 134 grams of marijuana were discovered.
Smith was detained at her house and taken to Jefferson County Jail.
The Alabama Department of Corrections stated that the investigation is still ongoing, and that additional charges may be filed.
