A 13-year-old was discovered dead Wednesday evening after jumping off a bridge in Ypsilanti.
A family member called emergency services at 5:15 p.m. on March 25 to report that the teen boy had jumped from the bridge overlooking the Huron River near Spring and Catherine streets, according to Ken Hobbs, chief of the Ypsilanti Fire Department.
The family member said that the boy from Ypsilanti Township was unable to swim. The boy never resurfaced.
Crews immediately entered the water to attempt a rescue but were unsuccessful, according to Hobbs.
“They did as much as they could, searched as far as they could,” according to Hobbs. “…You can’t see anything in that water.”
The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office Underwater Search and Recovery Team retrieved the boy’s body around 8:45 p.m., about 50 yards from where he jumped, according to Hobbs.
Hobbs stated that the boy’s name will not be disclosed due to his juvenile status.
The Ypsilanti Police Department could not be reached for any information.
