A man died in custody after being apprehended in Florida, according to local enforcement.
Leon County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 3100 block of South Fulmer Circle in Tallahassee in response to an agency request for Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
When deputies arrived, they found a man who had fled into the home and barricaded himself inside with a woman he was holding against her will, according to law authorities. Deputies became aware that the woman needed immediate assistance. When deputies attempted to intercede, the man started swinging a knife aggressively.
A deputy used his Taser, allowing him to take the suspect into custody.
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, according to the Leon County Sheriff’s Office.
Shortly after being arrested, the man, 50-year-old James Lee, went unresponsive. Deputies quickly started life-saving efforts until EMS arrived. He was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to identify the cause of death. When it is customary for all in-custody deaths, this is still an open investigation, and the Sheriff’s Office noted that further information will be given when it becomes available.
