Michigan State Police have opened a homicide investigation into the death of a Michigan inmate.
Joshua McGehee, 40, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in Ionia on March 27.
According to the MDOC, corrections officers tried but failed to save lives. He was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics.
According to an MDOC representative, the event is being investigated as a homicide by MSP and the MDOC in collaboration with the Ionia County Prosecutor’s Office.
According to state prison records, McGehee was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading no contest to a robbery charge in Macomb County in July 2020.
McGehee was the second inmate found dead at a Michigan jail this week, following Jarvis Butts, who was discovered in his cell on March 26. Butts was sentenced on March 12 for the murder of missing 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris. Authorities say Butts’ death is being examined as a suicide.
