New Jersey fugitive on lam since 1998 arrested in Wildwood

A man wanted in New Jersey since 1998 was nabbed after he was caught speeding in Wildwood.

Melvin Francis Mejia, 53, of Ocala, was driving a silver Toyota RAV4 eastbound on County Road 44A at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday when he was captured on radar at 54 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

During the ensuing traffic check, the deputy discovered that a warrant was issued on February 9, 1998 in Atlantic County, New Jersey, charging Mejia with failure to appear in court on charges of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon and unauthorized possession of a weapon. The Vineland, New Jersey resident was driving with a Florida driver’s license.

He was brought into arrest and placed into the Sumter County Detention Center. He will be given up to New Jersey authorities.
