Missing Massachusetts hiker found discovered on New Hampshire mountain

A missing hiker from Massachusetts was discovered dead on a mountain in New Hampshire.

According to New Hampshire Fish and Game, officials were notified of an overdue hiker in Franconia Notch about 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday.

Kent Wood, 61, of Boston’s West Roxbury area, drove to the Lafayette Campground in Lincoln on Friday, April 17, intending to camp and hike for the weekend.

Officials said he began trekking on Saturday morning, April 18, with mild temperatures and clear skies. Wood’s last contact with relatives and friends occurred on Saturday afternoon.

After two days of not hearing from Wood, his family alerted authorities.

Wood was prepared for milder weather, not the 3 to 5 inches of snow that fell between Sunday and Monday in Franconia Notch.

A search began on Tuesday morning, and at 7:41 p.m., Wood was discovered dead 5.5 miles from his vehicle on a secluded portion of Lincoln’s Kinsman Pond Trail.

New Hampshire Fish & Game reminds hikers that the mountains are still in winter, with deep snow, chilly temperatures, and freezing conditions.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
