A 16-year-old boy is critically injured after allegedly being shot by his mother during a domestic dispute late Sunday night in Mesa.
Around 9 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment complex near Dobson Road and Southern Avenue.
Witnesses at the scene reported that a juvenile child sustained a gunshot wound to the neck before a black car drove off. Officers followed the car to the emergency room and began chatting with the people involved.
Further inquiry revealed that Shamonica Cannon, 42, had come to her estranged husband’s residence with her 15-year-old son. As they approached the door, the 15-year-old informed police that he observed his mother was clutching a revolver. The child feared what his mother might do, so he tried to take her gun. According to authorities, the 16-year-old rushed outside to aid his brother and was shot in the neck while attempting to take the gun from his mother. The documents state that the gun exploded after pushing Cannon back against the neighbors’ door.
Police said family members attempted to assist the teen before loading him into the car and transporting him to the hospital. He is now conscious and alert.
Cannon reportedly told police that it was her gun and that it was an accident.
She faces accusations of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, discharge of a firearm within municipal limits, and endangerment. Cannon is being jailed under a $150,000 bond.
