Two men have learned their fates for a bus stop shooting in Phoenix that injured a man and a baby more than two years ago.

On Tuesday, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced that Miguel Ceja, 21, and Zackary Carillo, 20, will both face prison time for the shooting.

Ceja was sentenced to 21 years in jail after pleading guilty to attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault. Carillo pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder and received 10.5 years in jail.

The shooting took place in May 2023, when Cejo and Carrillo approached a man waiting for a bus after work near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road. According to MCAO, as the man looked up from his phone, Ceja raised his shirt, displayed a revolver in his waistband, and asked him if he was willing to die.

The man, fearing robbery, started heading to a nearby petrol station. Authorities claim that’s when he felt bullets hit his body, so he got out his revolver and fired back. MCAO reports that Ceja, Carrillo, and the victim exchanged more than two dozen rounds.

During the shooting battle, a stray bullet entered a car stopped at a red light, striking a 6-month-old baby in the head. The infant girl had a skull fracture, and the bullet that hit her was traced back to Ceja’s revolver.

The shooting victim, hit 17 times, sustained numerous injuries. Both the man and the baby lived.

“It’s miraculous that two innocent people, including a baby caught in the crossfire, didn’t lose their lives that day,” said Michell. “These criminals showed a blatant indifference for life all because of a perceived wrong look. Anyone who carries out this type of senseless violence in Maricopa County will be held accountable.”
