Fugitive who escaped custody discovered stabbed in Toledo apartment

A Toledo fugitive who had been on the run for weeks was discovered stabbed in a South Toledo apartment, and two others have been charged with helping him hide.

Juanya Gray, 26, who escaped from a jail transport truck on June 6 while being taken by Lucas County Correctional Treatment Facility to Mercy-St. Vincent Medical Center, was discovered Tuesday evening after police responded to a stabbing incident at an apartment on Pinebrook Parkway.

When officers arrived, Gray was found inside a restroom of the south Toledo apartment complex with a stabbing wound to the skull. He was sent to UToledo Medical Center and is likely to survive the incident. The cause of Gray’s injury is unknown at this time.

Loretta Chambliss, 26, and Semaj Simmons, 27, both described as living in the apartment where Gray was discovered, have been charged with obstructing justice for allegedly harboring Gray. Neither Chambliss nor Simmons were wounded.

At the time of Gray’s escape, authorities said Lucas County Correctional Treatment Facility workers were transporting him from the Lucas County Jail, which refused to admit Gray because it was suspected that he had consumed a substance prior to his intake.

Gray was on his way to Mercy-St. Vincent Medical Center for medical clearance when he hopped out of the car and escaped to a neighborhood near Cherry and Bancroft streets at 1:30 p.m.

Police say Gray was still wearing “belly chains/shackles” at the time.

On Wednesday, a Lucas County grand jury indicted Gray on one count of escape, a second-degree felony. He is also awaiting sentencing on aggravated burglary charges.
