2 collisions on I-5 near Battle Ground leave one dead and a DOT worker injured

A fatal crash, followed by a separate traffic incident a few hours later, led to the closure of all lanes of I-5 southbound at Battle Ground early Saturday morning, according to authorities.

Just before 5 a.m., Washington State Patrol troopers responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash.

When they arrived at the scene, they discovered one dead person and several injured car occupants.

Officials subsequently shut down both southbound lanes of I-5, and Washington State Department of Transportation crews responded to assist with traffic control as troopers investigated the crash.

The motorist, who investigators claim caused the accident, was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

At about 7:15 a.m., a separate vehicle rear-ended a DOT truck while crews were still on the scene, resulting in a DOT worker being transported to the hospital. Officials think he is likely to survive.

According to WSDOT, all lanes of I-5 southbound at milepost 10 near 179th Street, as well as the westbound SR 502 on-ramp to southbound I-5, were closed but reopened by 12 p.m.
