Jose Caballero Detained For DUI After Police Chase In VA

A Springfield man is facing a stack of charges after attempting to flee from deputies by making a frantic U-turn across traffic before smashing through a fence and being pepper-sprayed, authorities said.

Jose Caballero, 31, was arrested in Stafford County on Saturday, July 12, following a pursuit on Richmond Highway that ended when his silver Lexus exited the road, collided with several posts, and became entangled in a chain-link fence, according to the sheriff’s office.

Around 7:20 p.m., a Lexus swerved into the path of a deputy driving south on Richmond Highway, causing a commotion.

“After almost being struck, (the deputy) activated his emergency equipment and made a U-turn in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Instead of stopping, Caballero allegedly sped into the Taco Bell parking lot, dashed behind a 7-Eleven, and flew onto Hospital Center Boulevard before performing another U-turn and returning straight to the deputy.

According to officials, Caballero continued to do U-turns, traveling back and forth between Burns Corner Place and Richmond Highway until colliding with a car driven by a student.

There were no significant injuries recorded.

Caballero’s automobile went off-road and “knocked down multiple posts before finally coming to a stop when it became entangled in a chain-link fence,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies tried a high-risk stop, but Caballero was uncooperative, so “a pepper ball was deployed into the vehicle and had the desired effect.”

Caballero was subsequently imprisoned.

Deputies said he had “signs of intoxication” and had his license revoked.

Caballero was charged with:

  • Felony eluding;
  • Driving under the influence;
  • Driving while revoked;
  • Two counts of destruction of property

He is being held in Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
