Governor Bob Ferguson has officially enacted a comprehensive Right to Repair bill. Legislators aim to enhance access to faster and more affordable repairs for various digital and mobility devices.
Big picture view:
The Right to Repair Act (HB 1483) takes effect on July 26 following strong bipartisan legislative support. The law will ban several restrictive practices, including “parts pairing,” which has historically forced customers to seek repairs exclusively from manufacturers.
Consumers will now enjoy fairer access to the parts, tools, and information necessary for repairing their everyday digital devices, according to a Washington State House Democrats statement.
What they’re saying:
“This bill empowers everyday Washingtonians and small businesses while reducing waste,” Rep. Gregerson stated. “People deserve the right to fix their own devices without roadblocks.”
