Visitors to Presque Isle State Park found the body of a young female kayaker who went missing on Friday in Lake Erie.
NBC affiliate WICU-TV reports that multiple agencies were dispatched to the park’s Beach One after visitors discovered the body about 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Madison Gallagher, 17, of North Huntingdon Township in Westmoreland County, was identified by Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook as the deceased.
Crews began searching Friday evening after two teenagers went out in a kayak near Kelso Beach but were endangered by the surf, according to WICU.
A neighbor attempted to assist on his jet ski and was able to rescue one of the kayakers. He was transported to the shore and treated by doctors.
According to witnesses, neither Gallagher nor the other teen was wearing a life jacket, WICU reports.
Cook told WICU that he believes the death was accidental due to drowning.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is investigating the incident.
