Payment Schedule Continues in May, Plus a Second SSI Check Is Coming

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is set to send out another round of payments on Wednesday, May 28, benefiting millions who rely on this monthly support. These deposits go to retirees, people with disabilities, and survivors as part of the SSA’s regular schedule.

Social Security payments aren’t distributed all at once. Instead, the timing depends on the recipient’s birth date. Those born between the 21st and 31st of any month will receive their payment in this upcoming round. This staggered approach helps the SSA manage its system efficiently and ensure prompt delivery.

So far this May, two rounds have already been issued—one to those who began receiving benefits before 1997 and another to individuals born between the 1st and 20th. Payments this month are scheduled across three Wednesdays:

  • May 14: Birthdays from the 1st to the 10th
  • May 21: Birthdays from the 11th to the 20th
  • May 28: Birthdays from the 21st to the 31st

What to Do If Your SSA Payment Doesn’t Arrive

If your payment doesn’t show up on the expected date, the SSA recommends waiting three business days before reaching out. With 99% of payments now made electronically, delays are rare.

A Second SSI Check Is Coming This Month

The SSA also manages Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for seniors, blind individuals, and people with severe disabilities who have limited income. Typically, SSI payments are issued on the first of the month, but there’s an exception in May.

Since June 1 falls on a Sunday, the SSA will move that payment up to Thursday, May 30. This means SSI recipients will get two checks in May—one on May 1 and another on May 30.

About 7.4 million people currently receive SSI in the U.S., and roughly half also get regular Social Security benefits. The monthly payment amounts vary based on retirement age and past earnings, ranging from $2,831 to $5,108, depending on when someone retired.
