A double-fatal crash on Interstate 70 in New Market has led to the closing of both the eastbound and westbound lanes between Route 75 and Route 27, according to Maryland State Police.
On May 25 at 4:10 p.m., Frederick County troopers were alerted to a traffic incident at I-70 Exit 62.
The initial inquiry found that a motorist driving a BMW SUV westbound rear-ended a box truck. The box truck crossed the center median and collided with an eastbound tractor-trailer, according to officials.
“Both the box truck and tractor-trailer were propelled into the wood line adjacent to eastbound I-70 and caught fire,” the state’s police said.
The drivers of both automobiles were airlifted to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Centre.
According to officials, two occupants in the box truck were pronounced dead at the site. Their identities remain unknown at this moment.
Officials claim that the BMW driver refused medical assistance and stayed at the scene. Ground personnel transported two BMW passengers to a nearby hospital.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is investigating the event.
