Jackson city leaders voted to prohibit the wearing of masks in outdoor public locations such as sidewalks, roadways, and alleyways.
On Tuesday, the Jackson City Council approved the vote 7-0, according to WLBT-TV in Jackson. It’s expected to take effect immediately.
The prohibition covers facial coverings and hoods that hide or conceal a person’s face.
The restriction, according to city leaders, is a safety measure aimed at making it easier for law enforcement to identify offenders.
There are a few exceptions, including children under 14 and individuals over the age of 60.
There are other exemptions for those who use masks for health and safety reasons, masks for festivals or recreational events (such as trick-or-treating), and masks for work or religious purposes.
Police cannot stop or detain someone simply for wearing a mask.
Violators face fines of up to $500, 90 days in prison, or both.
Anyone found guilty of wearing a mask while committing a crime faces a fine of up to $1,000 and six months in jail.
