A 40-year-old mother is under arrest after deputies reportedly discovered her young daughter and a dog dead inside a vehicle.
On the night of August 9, Maine State Police stated the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to a business and discovered a 3-year-old child, identified by WCSH-TV as Fiona Brown, and a deceased dog. Investigators discovered that the vehicle was owned by the girl’s mother, Kelly Brown of Pennsylvania.
The child’s cause and manner of death are being investigated further; however, there was evidence of hyperthermia, which was most likely the cause of death. According to court documents obtained by WCSH, authorities believe the girl was left in the car for over 15 hours.
Kelly Brown’s family members allegedly informed police that she was hallucinating and hearing voices. Brown allegedly informed officials that voices told her what to do.
Brown, her daughter, and their 13-year-old dog were apparently visiting family in Maine when the incident occurred, but Brown’s mother reported her missing after several days of no contact.
According to WCSH, cops discovered the child and dog locked inside the vehicle and had to break the window to get in.
Brown reportedly told police that she and her daughter were picking up trash on the trip and that she would leave the toddler and dog in the car. Brown allegedly claimed she went to pick up rubbish but tripped and was swept into the Penobscot River. However, authorities reported that her clothes were not moist, and her testimony did not match the CCTV footage.
On August 10, state police arrested Brown on a manslaughter allegation. Brown initially appeared in court on August 11.
