Kia Boy Sentenced To 3 Years In Prison For Convenience Store Robberies And Burglary, But Walks On Time Served

A 20-year-old “Kia Boy” who skipped court after being charged with burglarizing a convenience store on the North Side and then robbing a 7-Eleven was sentenced to three years in jail. However, under Illinois sentence guidelines, he is not anticipated to serve another day in prison.

Tyrese Green pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of robbery and one act of burglary in return for three concurrent three-year sentences from Judge John Lyke, court documents show.

Green’s issues began on December 21, 2023, when cops observed a stolen Kia Sportage driving dangerously near 63rd and Halsted, with four masked males inside. The SUV, stripped of its steering column, was stolen from a driveway on West Chase Avenue. Minutes earlier, 911 callers reported spotting the same Kia as criminals broke into Hollywood Deli at 5700 North Sheridan, stealing cash and cigarettes.

All four occupants fled the car, but police discovered Green hiding under a porch with a “large quantity of unopened tobacco products.” More unopened items were retrieved from the Kia. Prosecutors charged him with burglary, and a judge ordered his release pending trial. Green never showed up to court.

He was on the loose until February 22, 2024, when he and three others allegedly robbed a 7-Eleven in the 3000 block of North Pulaski. Green pulled a clerk aside, stuffing cash and smokes into a blue bag and attempting to force the employee into a back office to access the safe, according to authorities. When it failed, the team fled.

Minutes later, a 911 caller alerted authorities to suspicious guys in an alley in the 3900 block of West Barry Avenue. Officers discovered Green on a porch, still clutching the blue bag filled with Newport smokes.

Green is not anticipated to serve any prison time after receiving credit for time served in jail and a 50% “good behavior” sentence reduction from the state.
