An O’Bannon High School student was killed in more gun violence in Greenville over the weekend.
According to Greenville police, Cody Boettcher, 16, was shot multiple times while sitting in the rear seat of a vehicle, and a 12-year-old was injured in the front seat as well. Police stated the vehicle was driven by an adult.
The incident happened around 8:40 p.m. on Sunday, near the 500 block of Highway 82 and Fairview. According to Delta News, Police Chief Marcus Turner stated that the shooting appeared to occur as the vehicle came to a stop at a red light.
Turner labeled the shooters “cowards” after other people in Greenville were hurt or died in similar gang violence. He asked the community to notify the police if they become aware of such criminal conduct.
Bottcher was a 9th grader. The Western Line School District released a statement saying, “Cody was a valued member of our school family, and his loss is felt deeply by students, teachers, and staff alike. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Cody’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve.”
