Man accused of using fake ID to buy roughly $100K in cars in Arlington and arrested in Houston

A man accused of buying cars with a fake driver’s license in North Texas was apprehended before attempting the same scheme in Houston.

According to the Houston Police Department, Gilberto Mojica, 22, was arrested on Wednesday attempting to buy a vehicle worth roughly $35,000 from a dealership on the city’s west side.

Investigators stated he was using a forged Texas driver’s license under the name “Jonathan Jaime.”

Mojica had previously purchased three other vehicles from dealerships in the Dallas-Arlington area using the same name, according to the Houston Police Department’s Vehicle Fraud Unit. These autos, worth about $100,000, have now been found and will be returned to the dealerships.

Mojica is accused of tampering with a government record and making a false statement to acquire credit, both felonies. He remains in the Harris County Jail on a $20,000 bond, with his next court date scheduled for September 2.

Investigators believe Mojica may have targeted additional dealerships in Texas because of how rapidly he obtained vehicles. This was his first recorded try in Houston.
