Cardoso, who lives in Miami, was later seen scouting for additional vehicles to take, according to officials.

Cardoso was captured, and authorities discovered he was an unauthorized immigrant from Cuba with a significant criminal record.

According to the MCSO, Cardoso has a lengthy criminal record that includes charges in both Georgia and Florida.

His record contains:

Georgia

  • Interference with government property

Florida

  • Hit-and-run
  • Traffic offenses
  • DUI
  • Resisting without violence
  • Driving while license suspended or revoked
  • Disorderly intoxication
  • Indecent exposure
  • Brawling
  • Petit theft
  • Drug offenses
  • Grand theft
  • Loitering
  • Dealing in stolen property
  • Grand theft auto

What’s next: Investigators say they are in contact with federal immigration officials to ensure they are aware of Cardoso and his significant criminal past, regardless of his country of birth or whatever special status he may have.

Meanwhile, Cardoso will serve his sentence in Martin County for the crime he committed. Law enforcement officials said they are taking all necessary precautions to prevent him from victimizing others.

What they’re saying: Deputies with the MCSO urge homeowners to remain vigilant by securing cars and homes and having alarms turned on.

“Take every safety precaution necessary to keep your families and your property safe,” officials said. “Most importantly, call in suspicious activity — Martin County citizens have been doing an excellent job of this. Thank you for your partnership.”
