Three people are dead after a collision in eastern Arizona on Sunday, Arizona DPS said.
Around 10 p.m., a two-vehicle collision happened on SR 260 at milepost 319 near Heber. According to DPS, a car heading westbound crossed the center line into the eastbound lanes, colliding with a Timber Mesa Fire District ambulance.
According to authorities, the driver of the first vehicle and two passengers in the ambulance died as a result of their injuries.
Officials have confirmed that the two firemen who died in the ambulance are Brenna Kulikowski and Damon Thompson.
Timber Mesa Fire and Medical District officials issued a message on their Facebook page Monday morning in response to the crash. Here’s part of the statement:
“Our entire organization is grieving the loss of our team members. We ask for privacy and compassion as we support the families, co-workers, and community during this very difficult time.”
The Flagstaff Fire Department said that extra fire units will be dispatched to assist with Timber Mesa Fire calls while the organization mourns the loss of the firemen.
Navajo County captured footage of a public safety procession honoring the two slain firefighters.
In a statement, Gov. Katie Hobbs said she was “heartbroken” to learn of the two firefighters’ deaths.
“These heroes dedicated themselves to protecting our communities, and my thoughts are with their families, loved ones, and fellow first responders during this difficult time,” the governor wrote in a statement.
