Sports during COVID – 19

Tate Jenson, Writer

On March 11, 2020, the NBA started a chain reaction that led to all of the major sports leagues shutting down. Soon after the NBA shut down, the NHL and the MLB followed their ways. This was the first sign of the government taking precautions and shutting large group gatherings down to try and help prevent the spread of COVID-19. After the shutdowns of these sports, the common question was whether or not these sports would be able to finish the rest of their seasons. People thought that these athletes had put in way too much time and effort for the season to be thrown down the drain.

Lately there has been a lot of rumors as to whether or not these leagues would completely cancel the remainder of the season and start over next year with a new one. Some of the ideas that have come across are, shortening the season, waiting for the pandemic to be over and continuing the season from where it left off, and even starting the playoffs based on the current team standings. The commissioners have yet to say anything about what their plans are for rescuing their seasons.

On April 4, 2020 Donald Trump had a conference call with all of the major league sports commissioners to discuss what they should do in these hard times. In this call Trump stated that he is hoping to get all of the major sports up and running by the end of the summer, but his main concern was the NFL. Currently, the NFL is in their offseason and they start in early September. In the conference call he said that he was hoping that everything would be back to normal by the time their season starts, but there was no way of telling if it will be this way.

All of the sports leagues have been told that they could do whatever they want to deal with their seasons being cut short, and now it is just a matter of time before we hear the official news of whether or not their seasons will be canceled or just postponed for the time being.
