When We Were Friends – Review
April 28, 2020
The Backseat Lovers are a rock group from my very own Salt Lake City, Utah. A new take on modern rock, with underwater, and dirty grimey tones, this band is soon to take over your heart, much like it has so many already. Their studio release When We Were Friends, includes the instant hit “Maple Syrup” and it will be sure to get your head banging. With soothing vocals, and sleepy tunes, all the way to the edge of breakup gritty vocals and pounding kick drums, their catchy riffs are more than enough to keep millions listening and wanting more. Songs like “Olivia” explore the relationship of two lovers, one of which is just a boy with a passion for music, and the other, a love for his girl Olivia. The song is almost a callout to Olivia to keep that boy close, as insignificant as it may seem. “Kilby Girl” tells the story of meeting a girl at Salt Lake’s own Kilby Court, a famous downtown concert venue, with the kilby girl too intriguing for lead singer Josh Harmon to let her go. There are also songs like “Sinking Ship,” that explore broken relationships. “If it’s me your waiting on then I say spend
your time on someone else’s sinking ship.” There are many more themes throughout the album pertaining to love. When We Were Friends is a rippin album. 10/10 would listen to again.
