Utah Woman Arrested For Transporting Illegal Drugs In Arizona With Husband

A Midvale, Utah, woman will join her husband in the Arizona Department of Corrections for transporting illegal drugs through northwest Arizona. During an April 30 traffic stop on Interstate 15, about four miles south of the Utah border, officers seized 18 pounds of methamphetamine and 45 grams of heroin from their car.

Deputy Mohave County Attorney Matthew Houston told Superior Court Judge Derek Carlisle that Virginia Romero-Willis, 54, drove because her husband, Rufus Willis, 63, was unable to.

According to defense attorneys Greg Pridham and Carlisle, Romero-Willis was less responsible than her husband, who claimed his wife was unaware and uninvolved.

Romero-Willis pled guilty to a reduced charge of attempting to transfer hazardous narcotics for sale. She apologized, accepted responsibility, expressed regret, and stated that she had learned from the experience.

Judge Carlisle denied her motion for probationary status. He stated that the quantity of drugs required a prison sentence, and he imposed two years.

Rufus Willis, previously serving a 25-year prison term for murder, received an 8-year sentence in the cocaine case.
