Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) say a student has been detained after threatening to reenact the Charlie Kirk assassination.
According to the announcement, a juvenile student was seen climbing to access a building’s roof during a scheduled fire drill on September 16 at around 9:40 a.m.
The Lackawanna Trail School District’s Superintendent Matthew Rakauskas said the building was used as a school maintenance garage.
When confronted, the student stated that he wanted to imitate Charlie Kirk’s assassination, officials claim. The student also commented on his ability to shoot long distances.
According to authorities, several children said that the suspect made similar comments to them during the simulation.
Lackawanna Trail School District issued a statement about the incident, stating:
The incident was reported to school administration, who then notified PSP Tunkhannock.
Although I won’t comment on a potential disciplinary issue related to a student, I will confirm that the State Police Press Release is accurate with the exception that the building mentioned is a school maintenance garage, not the Wellness Center. The incident was quickly reported to the administration by both teachers and students, and our School Police Officer and State Police Officers responded and addressed the situation immediately. After a thorough assessment of the situation and a sweep of the area in question no weapon was found on campus, and school resumed safely for the remainder of the day. Lackawanna Trail’s emergency safety plans, protocols, and policies were followed methodically, and there are currently no new or active threats against anyone’s safety district-wide. The efficiency and collaborative effort demonstrated by our faculty, administration, and law enforcement in keeping our school community safe is commendable.
Matthew Rakauskas, Superintendent, Lackawanna Trail School District
