A woman is charged with attempting to kill two Chicago police officers while assisting a man escape arrest on the West Side.
On May 21, officers were patrolling the 200 block of South Cicero when they allegedly noticed 38-year-old Joseph Howard standing close to a minivan that had been reported carjacked, according to a CPD report.
As Howard struggled with the officers, Keyana Wells, 24, drove the minivan in circles around them, instructing Howard to get in, according to prosecutors. According to authorities, she then pointed the truck squarely toward the cops and accelerated at them.
She allegedly struck one officer, but the other escaped injury. Howard stepped into the van, and the two drove away, according to officials.
The cops apprehended both of them a few days later. Prosecutors accused Wells of two charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors charge Howard with two counts of aggravated violence against peace officers and two counts of resistance.
Judge Luciano Panici, Jr. released Howard and placed him under 24-hour electronic surveillance. He ordered Wells’ detention awaiting trial.
