A Venezuelan migrant who has been arrested eight times in less than two years is now in custody on allegations of repeatedly stabbing a man on a Back of the Yards sidewalk to steal his phone, according to prosecutors.
Anthony Vasquez Guedez, 26, was ordered held on Wednesday by Judge Antara Rivera on charges of robbery and three counts of aggravated violence for the September 20 attack in the 4800 block of South Ashland Avenue.
Prosecutors said the victim was recording the neighborhood on his phone with the intention of sending the video to his family when Vasquez Guedez confronted him and ordered that he delete the clip. When the man refused, Vasquez Guedez allegedly pulled out a six-inch knife and stabbed him repeatedly until the victim handed over the device.
Vasquez Guedez was arrested last week in a different incident for allegedly threatening another person with a knife and violently kicking a Chicago police officer who attempted to apprehend him. Officers stated that a kitchen knife fell to the ground during their battle to apprehend him.
Court records reveal that Vasquez Guedez has been arrested eight times since January 2024. The charges include several shoplifting and domestic abuse claims, as well as battery and driving without a license twice in March 2024. He received a 32-day sentence for felony shoplifting earlier this month and did not appear in court for the driving charges, according to court documents. Prosecutors dropped all other cases.
Vasquez Guedez remains in detention while awaiting trial for his two most recent arrests.
