One person was arrested following a deadly mass shooting at a historically Black university in eastern Pennsylvania.
According to local authorities, Zecqueous Morgan Thompson was taken into custody while in possession of a firearm, and they believe a second shooter was involved.
Authorities did not believe the attack was premeditated.
A night of celebration turned tragic as shooting broke out during Lincoln University’s homecoming festivities, killing one and injuring six others.
The incident happened outside the university’s International Cultural Center, where students, alumni, and visitors had gathered to tailgate and socialize after the football game.
“We don’t have many answers as to what happened,” Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe told reporters.
“What I will tell you is that today we’re operating as if this is not an incident where someone came in with the design to inflict mass damage on a college campus.”
Authorities described a chaotic scene in which hundreds of people fled in multiple directions after bullets were fired. Investigators are requesting anyone with footage or information to contact Chester County detectives or the FBI, which is working with state police on the investigation.
Officials have not disclosed the victims’ identities or situations.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced on X, formerly Twitter, that he had been briefed on the shooting and offered state support to the Lincoln University community. “Join Lori and me in praying for the Lincoln University community,” Shapiro wrote in an email.
Lincoln University Police Chief Marc Partee noted that the shooting has destroyed the historically Black university, which is located about 45 miles southwest of Philadelphia.
“If there was another word to describe that that’s more impactful, I would use it,” Partee told reporters. “But ‘devastated’ is a start.”
The university’s classes are cancelled today.
The inquiry is still ongoing as officials try to uncover the reason for the horrific attack.
