A Pennsylvania man sentenced for child rape was discovered unresponsive in his cell at SCI Albion on Wednesday.
Andy Ortiz, 25, was given life-saving efforts by prison officials before being pronounced dead at 12:18 a.m. on Oct. 29, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
Ortiz has been at SCI Albion since February 19 of the current year, having been transferred from SCI Phoenix in June 2022. According to his 2020 court dockets, Ortiz was originally sentenced after pleading guilty to counts of rape and involuntary deviant sexual intercourse with a kid.
Ortiz was serving up to 15 years in jail, according to court documents.
SCI Albion stated that state police were alerted to conduct an investigation in accordance with state policy. The Erie County Coroner’s Office will establish the official cause of death.
