A D.C. man will serve 21 years in prison for the murder of Nikia Young, 37, who was shot seven times while crossing the street in broad daylight in 2022.
On March 15, 2022, Johnwann Elliott, 31, stepped off a Metro bus and walked to the intersection of Minnesota Avenue and 23rd Street Southeast. According to the United States Attorney’s Office in Washington, Young and another person were headed toward the same junction at the same time.
Elliot approached Young as she crossed the street and shot her seven times. He hit her five times: once in the face, three in the chest, and once in the hip.
According to the D.C. Attorney’s Office, he opened fire in broad daylight with a 380-caliber revolver.
Elliott fled the area on foot and boarded the same Metro bus he had arrived on.
Elliot was caught on May 19, 2022, inside a hotel in Washington, DC. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and attempted assault in 2024.
Elliott will be sentenced to 21 years in prison plus five years of supervised release.
