65 Year Prison Sentence for Murdering Man Who Bumped Into His Friend

A South Side man who was 17 when he gunned down a stranger after a brief shoulder bump outside an Avalon Park gas station in 2021 has been sentenced to 65 years in prison, bringing an end to nearly four years of litigation, a jury trial, and post-trial filings.

Jaebrel Miles had a juvenile felony gun case pending when he killed 26-year-old Jeffrey King on the late morning of May 28, 2021, according to authorities. Around 11:30 a.m., Miles and a friend walked to a gas station on South Stony Island’s 8300 block to get snacks.

As they returned to the nearby house where they had been hanging out, King ran into a friend on the sidewalk. Prosecutors said the two exchanged words before going their separate ways, with King entering the petrol station.

Miles and a friend walked to the gas station after returning to the house. Surveillance video captured the men confronting King inside the establishment. Miles allegedly drew a gun and fired over his friend’s shoulder. The companion ducked, pulled out his revolver, and fired at King.

King was struck numerous times and died.

Miles was detained later that day while riding in a Lyft. Officers discovered a loaded weapon with a defaced serial number under the seat in front of him, as well as baggies containing heroin, crack cocaine, and ecstasy within his luggage.

Miles was found guilty of four counts of murder by a jury in April 2024, but after extensive post-trial legal maneuvering, Judge Angela Munari-Petrone only recently imposed the 65-year sentence, which Miles must serve in full. With credit for his time in custody, he is expected to be released on July 3, 2086.

Miles’ legal exposure, however, continues to increase. According to court records, he has 12 more felony cases outstanding, all of which were filed after he was in jail, and most of them allege aggravated battery against workers of the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. Any of these could lead to an extension of his prison sentence.
