The Fourth Squad has arrested a Jamaican woman for an incident that occurred on Friday, December 5, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. in Lawrence.
According to detectives, when the nighttime health assistant of a 96-year-old female victim arrived at the residence to relieve the daytime aid, she discovered a laceration on the victim that had not been present the night before. The victim also complained of leg pain. The nighttime health assistant contacted the victim’s legal guardian and called 911.
Officers transported the victim to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of a broken femur. The victim’s legal guardian saw CCTV footage from inside the house and witnessed the victim collapse. She then observed the daytime home health aide seize the victim’s leg and violently shake it, causing the victim excruciating pain.
The helper did not call 911 or bring the victim the necessary medical assistance. Following an extensive investigation, the defendant, Marie Byron, 65, was apprehended without incident.
Byron is charged with endangering the welfare of an elderly, incompetent, or physically disabled person in the first degree and an incompetent, physically disabled person in the second degree. She will be arraigned on Monday, December 8, 2025, in First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
