Police: Cook County Man Hit Woman With Gun After Bears Watch Party

A Cook County man allegedly hit and injured a woman with a gun during an argument after leaving a watch party for the Bears-Packers game last weekend.

Jabari Gates, 44, of Homewood, is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated domestic battery, and gun possession by a repeat felony offender, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 7:30 p.m. on December 7, a woman approached sheriff’s officers who were responding to an unrelated crash near Joe Orr Road and Stoney Island Avenue in the extreme south suburbs. According to authorities, she informed them that her passenger had a gun and was attempting to kill her.

Officers apprehended Gates and discovered a gun in the snow nearby. They also discovered a magazine in the car when the victim let them search it.

The victim was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Investigators discovered that Gates was arguing with the victim in the car after returning from a watch party in Chicago. He allegedly pulled out a gun, slapped her with it, pointed it at her while she was driving, and blocked her from contacting 911.

Prosecutors approved the charges two days later. Following his initial court appearance, a judge ordered Gates to remain in the Cook County Jail.
