Jeffon Williams, who shot two Chicago police officers during a 2020 traffic stop and later told an investigator, “F*** that officer, I hope he dies,” was sentenced to 91 years in prison.
On August 14, a jury convicted Williams of nine felony counts, including multiple counts of attempted murder, and Judge Steven Watkins sentenced him on Monday to two consecutive 45-year prison terms for the attempted murders and a consecutive one-year sentence for unlawful use of a weapon. Williams must serve 85 percent of the attempted murder sentence.
Williams was 19 years old when he shot two Chicago Police Department officers in Homan Square early on August 30, 2020. He was on bail at the time of the shooting for a pending burglary and stolen vehicle charge.
Uniformed police in a marked squad car were investigating a “person with a gun” complaint around 2:30 a.m. when they noticed Williams perform a U-turn in a vehicle without a license plate in the 3300 block of West Polk Street. The cops followed Williams’ vehicle but did not attempt to stop it until he pulled onto a side street.
Two more policemen arrived to assist, and the police carried out the traffic stop. Before authorities arrived, Williams lowered his vehicle’s rear seat and went into the trunk, according to prosecutors. Moments later, an officer shined a light through the tinted windows, revealing a revolver with an extended magazine on the center console.
Prosecutors claimed Williams then crawled from the back seat toward the pistol, ignoring repeated requests to exit the vehicle. The police shattered the car windows and dragged him out as he clutched the pistol. Four cops pinned Williams to the ground, but he refused to display his hands and concealed the gun beneath his body, according to prosecutors.
After a 12-second fight, Williams opened fire on two policemen. The other officers took cover as Williams fled the area with the gun. A responding unit pursued Williams, who turned and pointed the handgun at an officer, causing the officer to fire numerous times, striking and gravely injuring Williams.
When investigators later questioned Williams about the shooting, he allegedly said, “F*** that officer, I hope he dies.”
Both injured officers were males with around two years on the force. Someone got shot in the shoulder. The other sustained more serious injuries, including bullet wounds to his body and arm, resulting in lung and intestinal damage.
A judge ordered that body-worn camera footage and other investigation data pertaining to the event be withheld while Williams’ lawsuit was continuing; therefore, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability has yet to release them.
