A Home Depot employee who was caught stealing from his cash register told authorities that he did so because he was hungry.
Matthew Pemantel, 26, of Wildwood, faces a theft allegation after being arrested Friday at the Home Depot on Powell Road in Wildwood.
According to an arrest complaint from the Wildwood Police Department, he was captured on surveillance in May and June swiping money from the cash register and placing it in the pocket of his Home Depot apron. He was accused of stealing $110 in cash. When interviewed by police at the time of his arrest, the 280-pound Pemantel stated that he “had no money to eat” and “was hungry.”
Pemantel related a similar scenario in 2024, when he was arrested for stealing money from the cash register while working at the Lowe’s home improvement store in Trailwinds Village.
Pemantel was arrested on Friday and placed into the Sumter County Detention Center before being released after posting a $500 bond.
