Northeast Weather Alert: 80% Chance of Arctic Cold Hitting New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont

A high-confidence arctic outbreak is more expected to spread over the Northeast, with an estimated 80% likelihood of dangerously cold temperatures hitting the region late this week or early next week. The cold air is predicted to bring some of the toughest winter conditions yet, increasing concerns about travel, public safety, and infrastructure in several states.

According to the National Weather Service, a strong arctic air mass is forecast to sweep throughout New England and the Northeast corridor, affecting Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and northern Pennsylvania. The coldest weather is predicted from Saturday to Tuesday, with daytime highs in the teens and single digits and overnight lows far below freezing, particularly in the interior and northern parts.

Wind chills will be the most dangerous, dipping to 15 to 30 degrees below zero in parts of northern New England and upstate New York. Even major metropolitan centers like Boston, New York City, Albany, and Hartford may experience deadly wind chills overnight and early in the morning, increasing the risk of frostbite with prolonged exposure.

The cold may be accompanied by lake-effect and upslope snow showers, particularly in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania, and interior New England, resulting in slippery travel conditions on Interstates 90, 91, 93, and 95. Officials advise households to reduce their outdoor exposure, insulate exposed pipes, and prepare vehicles for harsh cold.

The arctic pattern is forecast to persist until early next week, with additional wind chill advisories or warnings probable as the Northeast experiences extended, deadly cold.
