One person is in custody after a stabbing at Castleton Square Mall, police announced Thursday.
Lem Word, 26, is accused of stabbing a man with a folding knife inside the mall shortly before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department press release.
Several cops provided first aid to the victim as others searched for the suspect.
Within 30 minutes, officers identified the suspect’s vehicle and conducted a traffic stop in the 3900 block of North Keystone Avenue, approximately 8 miles southwest of the mall.
The driver, later identified as Word, pulled over but then attempted to flee, according to IMPD. He was swiftly apprehended and taken into custody.
According to IMPD, the victim was wounded as he attempted to stop Word, a repeat shoplifter. According to a police report obtained by News 8, Word was in possession of three stolen Macy’s handbags when he was arrested.
Word is facing preliminary accusations for violence, theft, resisting law enforcement, and cocaine possession. According to online court records, he had prior theft convictions, one of which occurred in Marion County.
The Marion County Jail has yet to release word. Formal charges have not been filed, and no court date has been set.
