Dozens of schools have announced that class will be canceled on Friday due to severe weather and an incoming winter storm.
The closures will affect hundreds of thousands of school-age youngsters. The announcements come as the United States experiences unusually low temperatures from the north, with a winter storm expected to hit the Southern Plains on Friday.
AccuWeather senior meteorologist Bob Larson told Newsweek that many schools from Texas to the Northeast could be shuttered “for days” after the storm has passed.
Long-term power outages, combined with days of subfreezing temperatures and ice buildup from the storm, may potentially contribute to the closures.
School closures had been declared as of early Friday morning in Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, Ohio, Missouri, and Kansas.
