A South Side homeowner said squatters took over her home and refused to leave.
Sheri Klaas posted signs in her front yard demanding the strangers leave her home.
The alleged squatters have been arrested and charged.
The property owner is relieved, to say the least.
She was present while cops evacuated the alleged occupants of her home.
The owner has finally regained possession of her home.
Klaas is ecstatic after months of trying to evict accused squatters.
This all began last October, when she claims a man, his girlfriend, and their dog moved into her Roseland property.
Klaas claimed they were not her tenants. This is my investment and home. “I’m losing money every day,” she explained.
She even went so far as to protest outside her home, asking that the suspected squatters leave or face arrest.
Although the Illinois Squatter Law went into force this year, authorities did not remove the persons inside.
According to the owner, the individual inside claimed to have a lease and refused to leave. When I arrive at the house, he will say, ‘Hey, Sheri, you can’t get me out of here,'” Klaas recalled.
Chicago police said they don’t evict people, but they do enforce criminal trespass when they can prove someone is illegally trespassing.
DeAndre Williams, 22, was arrested and charged.
His accusations include criminal trespassing on property, sex offender registry/false information, reckless discharge of a handgun, and electronic harassment.
Kellie White was charged with criminal trespassing on a dwelling.
Klaas said the pair left a massive mess behind, with holes, clothing, and pet droppings everywhere.
But eventually, she is relieved to have her house back.
Williams must remain in detention until his next court appearance on Friday.
White is scheduled to appear in court in March.
Neither has filed a plea.
