On June 10, ICE arrested four people inside Annandale’s immigration court.
They have been waiting for their cases to be heard, according to John Cano, senior organizer at the Legal Aid Justice Center.
The Annandale Immigration Court, located at 7619 Little River Turnpike, is part of the United States Department of Justice.
As of yesterday, it was unknown if ICE detainees’ cases were dismissed or where they lived. They could be from Annandale or other parts of Virginia, including the Virginia Beach area, Cano added.
“What we’re seeing is that folks are going to their court hearings and doing all the necessary steps to obey the law, and after that, they’re being apprehended,” he told me.
People attend immigration court for various reasons. They may be seeking asylum or attending their first hearing to have their charges read.
“This is something we’re seeing at the national level,” Cano told the crowd. “Folks are going to their court hearings in order to win their case or have any type of adjustment in their case, and, unfortunately, ICE agents are arresting them at the court.”
Last week, activists from the New Virginia Majority captured footage of ICE authorities arresting 11 people outside Sterling’s immigration court.
