Turkish man with N.Y. driver’s license apprehended near gate in The Villages

A Turkish man with a driver’s license from New York was apprehended near an access gate to The Villages.

Sergen Saylam, 29, of Pine Island Fish Camp, was driving a silver rental car near the Shay Gate on the Historic Side of The Villages around 9 p.m. Monday when an officer noticed the vehicle had a non-functioning headlight, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department.

During a traffic check, the Turkish native handed the police his New York driver’s license while admitting he had moved to Florida for business more than a year ago. The officer checked the driver’s license and found it suspended.

Police arrested Saylam on charges of driving while suspended and not obtaining a Florida license within the required 30-day period. The Lake County Jail took him into custody. He was released after paying a $1,000 bond.

The automobile was handed over to Saylam’s girlfriend.
