A 49-year-old woman is accused of fatally shooting her daughter following a physical dispute over stolen alcohol, according to a Dallas police arrest affidavit.
Dallas police responded to a 911 call in the 800 block of Green Cove Lane shortly before 4 p.m. Monday. The caller informed dispatchers that her mother had shot her in the side. Officers working a block away were able to arrive on the scene within minutes.
Investigators discovered 28-year-old Tabatha Jones in a bedroom with a gunshot wound. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died around an hour later.
Shanika Battle, 49, was arrested at her house. According to the affidavit, Battle and Jones were the only people at the residence when cops arrived.
After obtaining a search warrant, authorities discovered a revolver in the living room beside Battle’s purse, as well as a. 380-caliber discharged cartridge casing in the hallway outside the victim’s room.
In a police interview, Battle reportedly told detectives that she was irritated because her daughter had taken an alcoholic beverage from her. Battle claimed Jones was “going into rooms that aren’t hers,” which sparked a verbal altercation that became physical.
According to the affidavit, Battle confirmed she owned the gun and claimed she retrieved it from her purse to “scare” her daughter, after initially denying shooting the firearm.
Battle is currently incarcerated in the Dallas County Jail on murder charges.
