A powerful Arctic system is predicted to produce heavy snow, near-blizzard conditions, and dangerously severe wind chills in parts of the DMV and Mid-Atlantic region from Friday morning to Saturday morning, triggering many Winter Storm Watches.

The National Weather Service predicts the most significant consequences in western Maryland, central and western Pennsylvania, and northern and central West Virginia, particularly in higher elevations and mountain areas.

Dangerous Winter Storm Expected Across 9 Counties in New York

Snowfall totals of up to 6 inches are predicted in western Maryland, including Garrett County, with higher amounts locally along Backbone Mountain, Keysers Ridge, and Piney Mountain. Wind gusts might approach 60 mph, resulting in whiteout conditionsResidents should closely monitor the latest projections and start preparing immediately. on I-68, US-219, and US-40, making travel hazardous or impossible.

In Pennsylvania, Cambria and Somerset counties might receive 2 to 4 inches of snow, with up to 6 inches on ridgetops. Near-blizzard conditions are predicted Friday afternoon and night, with wind chills dropping to 20 to 30 degrees below zero, posing a life-threatening exposure danger.

Several sections of West Virginia, including Greenbrier, Preston, Randolph, Pocahontas, Nicholas, and Tucker counties, may receive 3 to 7 inches of snow with wind gusts of 45 to 50 mph, resulting in blowing snow, downed tree branches, and possibly power outages.

Officials warn that the storm might significantly disrupt the Friday evening commute and strongly advise citizens to postpone travel if possible. Frostbite and hypothermia can occur in less than 30 minutes under normal conditions.

Forecasters emphasize that a winter storm watch indicates that conditions are favorable for severe winter weather, and warnings may be issued as confidence grows. Residents should pay close attention to new projections and begin preparing right away.
